If you have an official MC
Send your MC to your assigned TA — including any MCs from before TAs were allocated. If you are not sure whether an older MC was recorded, send it again.
Send MCs to your TA only. Not to Donn or Pieter. Your TA keeps your MC record, and the smaller group size is what keeps it accurate.
Then pick how you want the missed work handled.
Both options protect your grade. Your TA will arrange whichever you choose with the Professors.
Catch up and submit
Your TA takes you through the learning, Quiz and Challenge you missed — in person or over Zoom, at a time you arrange together.
Recordings and supplementary materials are provided where they exist. Not every activity can be meaningfully recorded, which is why the walkthrough matters.
Your TA reopens the portal and you submit on an extended deadline.
Choose this if you want the marks in your own hands.
Exemption
The affected activities are exempted and their weighting is redistributed across your remaining submissions.
You are never given a zero for a medically certified absence. In effect, your other Quizzes and Challenges carry slightly more weight in place of the exempted ones.
Choose this if catching up would set back your recovery or your other work.
Your extended deadline, if you choose Option A
Quizzes
There are 20 graded Quizzes, excluding Week 1. Only 16 marks are counted — and 16 is the full 8%. That leaves you four spare.
Pass more than 16 and nothing is lost — the extra marks simply do not add to your grade. The four spare Quizzes are there for ordinary life: illness without an MC, clashing commitments, and the days you judge it unwise to come to class.
How a Quiz is marked
Late Quizzes
There is no normal late submission for Quizzes. They are live in-class activities and they also serve as our attendance check. Missing one without an MC or another authorised reason is recorded as non-attendance, and that mark is forfeited.
We sometimes leave a Quiz open longer than planned — Wi-Fi trouble, the timing of the activity, or other class circumstances. While it is open, your submission counts, even past the stated deadline. Always check before assuming you have missed it.
These are handled under Section 1. You can recover the mark in full by resubmitting through the reopened portal, and doing so does not use up any of your four spare Quizzes.
Challenges
Five Challenges in total. The Week 1 Challenge is ungraded, leaving four that count — one per week, 8% each, marked out of 10.
Late Challenges
Unlike Quizzes, Challenges can be submitted late. The penalty is 0.1 mark out of 10 per hour late, or part of an hour — so a submission 90 minutes late loses 0.2, not 0.15.
The penalty begins only after your extended deadline, not the original one. Everything submitted inside the extension window is treated as on time.
You can still attempt and submit the Challenge on the normal deadline, exactly like everyone who was present. The late penalty above applies if you go past it.
Working out how to do it is your responsibility: use the uploaded slides or recordings where they exist, or check with classmates. If you had a good reason for being away, your TA may be willing to walk you through it.
Absence without an MC
Without an MC or another authorised valid reason, there is no extension, no make-up graded activity, and no remedial teaching.
This is not meant to be harsh — it is why the four spare Quizzes exist. That buffer is the flexibility for ordinary, non-authorised absences, and it is deliberately generous. Use it when you need it.
If something significant is going on and you are unsure whether it counts as an authorised reason, speak to your TA early rather than after the deadline has passed.
